🐱James 1:2,4, 13-15, 16, 19-20, 25-26 & Luke 15: 11-32 : Parallel: 2 Timothy 2: 25, 1 Peter 4
📖 The parable told by Jesus of the “Prodigal Son/Lost Son” is one of the most famous & hailed by Mark Twain as one of the greatest short stories ever written. Luke tells us, Jesus, with his disciples, was traveling through the countryside toward Jerusalem & teaching along the way. Those coming to watch were “sinners” & Pharisees which leads us to understand the roles of the characters in the parable.
👦The younger brother, seemingly the lost brother, the sinner, the unrighteous, who would give into his own evil desires & was “dead”. However, there is a time when the brother is suffering because of his choices, & he “comes to his senses” or “metanoia” in the original greek translation. He realises this is NOT a trial, but he is suffering due to discipline for his actions. In Greek “metanoia”= “repentance, denotes a change of mind, a reorientation, a fundamental transformation of outlook, of man’s vision of the world & of himself, & a new way of loving others & God.” The younger brother matures in his relationship with God & returns home accepting responsibility for his choices.
👴The older brother, however stayed home doing the work & “obeying” (like the Pharisees), but in the moment most needed to show his Christ like heart, he let his earthly desires be displayed. He angers, is prideful, is a gossiper (no one said what the younger brother squandered his money on) & he didn’t love his brother at that moment. The older brother does exactly what James 1 tells us as christians NOT to do! However, the parable is left without an ending. The Father goes back to the Older son & reminds him of this miracle to celebrate his brother’s return to life & the story is over…..Does the older brother “come to his senses”?
✝️ Being a Christian is hard. We have to dig deep within ourselves, to not deceive ourselves & to “come to our senses”.
🚨Where is our suffering coming from? Is it a trial, something we can’t control (disease, death, human making, disaster)? Or is it discipline, something from our sin that we turn to God & ask for it to be taken away from our hearts? How can we prepare for our sufferings?
🔔When asked, can we accept responsibility for our choices? And when needed most will we reflect our earthy selves or Jesus’ heart & love to our brothers? Will we hold up the crown?

🙏🏻🐈⬛ Oh Heavenly Father, thank you for another day full of your grace. Cleanse the depths of our hearts, so that only your love reflects in our life. Lord take away our earthly desires that separate us from you & that keep us from the good that only you could have planned for us. Let us prepare for the trials by keeping your word & truth close to our hearts, & let our choices reflect the wisdom we receive from you. In God’s name we pray, Amen.
